“CAFFEINE & BREASTFEEDING”

Q.    "Is it alright to drink coffee during breastfeeding?”.

A.     During breastfeeding, any food or drinks containing caffeine should be limited as caffeine does pass through the milk.  These include coffee, iced and cold teas, colas and other soft drinks with caffeine.

Generally, moderate intake of caffeine (do count all sources of caffeine) causes no problems for most breastfeeding mothers and babies.  The amount of caffeine referred to here is that equivalent to what is contained in five or fewer 5oz cups of coffee per day.

Do pay attention to whether your baby is sensitive to your caffeine intake however. Some babies may tend to be more sensitive than others.  A baby who is overstimulated by caffeine may be unusually fussy & wakeful.
