BOOK REVIEW:  THE NURSING MOTHERS' COMPANION

(published in "Keeping Abreast" Jul/Sept 1998)

by Ms Samuelina Wan

  BOOK:  The Nursing Mothers' Companion
AUTHOR:     Kathleen Huggins

This book is written in an Easy-to-Read style and contains many practical tips for breastfeeding from birth to toddlerhood.  It breaks down the breastfeeding experience into specific time periods (while pregnant, first week, second week, first 2 months, 2 to 6 months, 6 months & beyond, and so on.).  It then goes on to detail what a breastfeeding mother should expect during each of these time periods, the common and not so common problems that she might encounter accompanied by very useful step-by-step methods to solve these problems.

There is also excellent advice on topics like going back to work, nursing during pregnanyc, nursing toddlers, nursing special needs babies and other circumstances (adoption, prematurity, diabetes, developmental delays, etc.).   Another aspect that makes this a very good resource and guidebook is the sections where the author has a rating of breastpumps and an appendix on the Safety of Drugs during breastfeeding.

All in, I find that any breastfeeding mother would find this book very useful to have around the house.  I would high recommend this book - especially to expectant and new mothers!
